The VU and especially Lou put a lot of work into "being cool". Funny thing was, they weren't weirdos or the kind of "special" people you read about; there were a lot of East Village people, artists/musicians/writers and more, who were MUCH further out. They just didn't get to ride Warhola's fame rocket. Not nearly enough ever gets said about Gerard Malanga and his part of the Inevitable, but I guess that's just not convenient. But being only blocks away from The Anderson Theater and not-much-later The Fillmore East, The VU didn't have nearly as much impact in their own "home" as revisionists try to makeit seem.
