The image of the man deep in thought at a simple rustic table reflects Cézanne's meditations on the loneliness of the individual and the artist. Yet everything about the picture of this man, as in Cézanne's landscape painting, seems monumental and extra-temporal. Cézanne's smoker "is as individual as a portrait, as universal as an idea, as impressive as a monument and as strong as a clear conscience" (Lionello Venturi).
