Flick Review < Le deuxième souffle | Jean-Pierre Melville, 1966

Jean-Pierre Melville & Lino Ventura on the set of "Le Deuxième Souffle", 1966

During the shooting of the scene in which Lino Ventura runs after the freight train that he tries
to jump in, director Jean-Pierre Melville asked the train conductor to speed the train up, making
it more difficult for Ventura to successfully make the jump, and Melville wanted to see the pain on
his face as he tried harder to catch the train. When Ventura heard about this, long after the shooting,
he was so angry about it that he had a huge row with Melville. The two never spoke again. They
did make another film together, The Army of Shadows (1969), but only spoke to each other through
 assistants.

Jackson Pollock, Number 13, 1950

"Υπάρχει μια ακίνητη ηλικία εκεί στην φύτρα της κάθε ώρας και στιγμής. Ο κόσμος
είναι αρχές που όλο αρχίζουν κι αδιάκοπα θα αρχίζουν στους αιώνες αδιάκοπα.
Ο χρόνος δεν προορίζεται για ανθρώπους."

Woman’s Nature is Like a Great House Full of Rooms | Edith Wharton, 1893

Karel Teige, Collage #366, 1949

"I have sometimes thought that a woman’s nature is like a great house full of rooms:
there is a hall, through which everyone passes, going in and out; the drawing room,
where one receives formal visits; the sitting room, where members of the family
come and go as they list; but beyond that, far beyond, are other rooms, the hands
of whose doors are perhaps never touched; no one knows the way to them, no one
knows whither they lead; and in the innermost room, the soul sits alone and waits."

Edith Wharton, The Fullness of Life, 1893
